Speech and Debate Classes

Persuasive Speaking (Original Oratory)

Students will learn how to select current even topics in their field of interest, conduct research, analyze evidence, outline and draft persuasive speeches, and perform their speeches.

Student Congress

Students will learn the basic structure of debate argumentation and the ability to critically analyze a situation from multiple perspectives.

Model United Nations (MUN)

Students will learn how to debate as representatives of their respective countries regarding current world issues in an atmosphere similar to that of the United Nations.

Extemporaneous Speaking

This class offers students an opportunity to give persuasive speeches on current events issues. They will learn to take their growing knowledge of domestic and international topics and then give compelling speeches on those topics with very limited prep time.

Future Business Leaders of America

Students will learn about the high school organization known as Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) as well as prepare for FBLA competitions.

Policy Debate (for select students upon request)

This is a very advanced and rigorous debate course intended for students that are interested in learning more about government policies. They will learn to research complex issues and develop briefs on that research. Finally, they will learn to debate all the advantages and disadvantages of a particular policy proposal.

Expository/Informative Speaking

Students will be instructed on appropriate ways to create, handle, and present visual aids during their speech performances.

Parliamentary (Team) Debate

Students will learn a form of debate based on the English parliamentary system by pairing up and debating opposing pairs of students on various topics.

Impromptu Speaking

This class allows the students to develop their critical thinking and presentation skills within a specified time frame.

Mock Trial

Students will learn how the courtrooms operate as well as play the roles of the prosecution and the defendant in various mock trials.

Lincoln Douglas / Philosophy

This course offers debaters a chance to learn about major philosophical theories and debate about morally controversial issues. They will learn to incorporate philosophical worldviews into their debate arguments and effectively conquer a skill that most students don’t even learn in college.
